Swim Meet Domination!

Seven Hills Swim Club had their first swim meet yesterday and Cole (9) and Cooper (4) were both entered for their new team.  After a day of sweltering heat, Seven Hills came out as victors over the Cottonwood Pirates with a final score of 530 to 813.  Way to go, Barracudas!

When we joined the club in early June, Cooper could not yet swim 25 yards of freestyle without stopping.  A mere 2 weeks later, the boy swam not only 25 yards of free, but also 25 yards of backstroke and was the number 3 man on the 6 & under boys Freestyle B Relay!  He did all three events with a personal best time and not once did he stop to grab the lane line for a break.  It was fabulous!

His backstroke is hilarious!  Albeit legal, he doesn't use his arms much and mostly just kicks with his head back, chin up and body nearly vertical rather than horizontal.  The best part is that he is smiling from ear to ear the entire length of the pool.  His arms are moving, yes.  But they are actually kinda going the opposite way that they should be...more like in a freestyle motion so they don't help him progress much.  By the end of the race, he was the only man in the pool so, given that he is the youngest team member, the entire pool was cheering him on.  After the race, the head coach called him over to tell him "Great job" and give him an Air Heads candy reward.  He got up to her and in a form like the statue from the movie "A Night at the Museum" he proceed to flex one arm up and say "Boom" then flex the other arm up and say "Pow."  Anyone within close proximity was HOWLING!  If I had a video of that, it would surely get top hits on YouTube.

The age-group cut-off date is June 1.  Since Cole turned 9 after that date, he gets to swim this season as an 8-year old.  So, for the 7-8 boys, he was entered in 25 Back, 25 Breast, 100 IM (fly, back, breast, free) and the A freestyle and medley relays (breast).  Not to sound biased, but the kid SMOKED 'EM in every event!  He came away with HIGH POINT for his agegroup and first place in all five events.  Cole spent last week in Vacation Bible School and the week before was held poolside with swimmer's ear so he has only been to a few practices since joining the team.  Therefore, the coaches really didn't know Cole at all.  But, when he got to his last leg of the IM nearly 3/4 of the pool ahead of anyone else, Coach turned around to me and said, "Um...WOW!"  I think they know him now.

What a day.

Love,
Proud (and loud) Mama
