Pat moves in!

We have a new baby doll in the house that we picked up at a garage sale the other day.  This is Ivy's first baby doll and she was so excited that she hugged and kissed this little baby all the way home.  Ivy loves her new baby and I helped her dress it and add the shoes that she picked out.  When we took a picture of the two together, she was thrilled.

It didn't take long for Jason and me to start making fun of this new baby.  It is funny looking.  Scary-looking.  And creepy in so many ways.  We had a hard time naming it because we couldn't tell if it was a boy or a girl.  So we named this androgynous creature, Pat.  We were happy for Ivy and glad she has a new friend.

But things soon changed.  Pat started to walk around here like he owned the place.  It was strange.  Annoying.

Pat eavesdrops on our conversations.

Pat has taken over the remote and will only watch Brett Favre.
It's impossible!

When Brett Favre isn't on, he hogs the computer and watches youtube.  I just caught Pat watching a Big Soft Curls Tutorial and then a terrible clip called "Bad Mouth Kids."  It's ridiculous.

Ivy loves Pat and we've tried to be accepting of her new friend, but it may have been the final straw when we caught Pat stealing beer from the fridge and putting it in the baby bottle before Ivy fed him.   I'm afraid Pat's going to have to go.

French Friends and Fourth Grade

Big Cole started fourth grade at Scales Elementary yesterday and is thrilled that some of his favorite buddies have also landed in Mrs. Thomson's Class.  He thinks she is going to be his best teacher yet and his enthusiasm and excitement is such a bright way to start off the school year!

Cooper, Ivy and I also had a great day as we enjoyed an impromptu sushi lunch with a friend of Rick's from LA.  Sarah is from France and is a business student at Santa Monica College.  So, before school kicks off again, she is enjoying a tour of the country and made a pit stop in Music City USA.  Sarah is an absolute doll and the kids adored her (and the many games on her iPhone).

Her trip has been amazing and we wish her safe travels as she heads off to Lynchburg (the home of Jack Daniel's) and then toward the great city of New Orleans.

Bonne chance, Sarah!

Mad Scientists!

For the past week, Cooper has been begging me to do the Magic Science kit that he found in Cole's closet.  Since Cole was out of town, I told him that we had to wait until Cole got back so that we could all do it together.  So, without further adieu, we broke out the kit this morning and had a great time.

We started by making the wizard hat and magic wand.  Ivy helped from the tabletop but soon became more of a hindrance than a helper and was whisked off to bed.  The hat turned out to be a smidge small for Cooper's ginormous noggin but it was cute, none the less.

The magic wand would first be created in a test tube by adding polyacrylamide crystals to colored water and then would be transferred into the longer tube/wand for the real magic.  These jiggly crystals absorb up to 300 times their weight in water and after about an hour you have a cool concoction ready to be stuffed into your magic wand.  Cooper opted for a rainbow of colors because he wanted to offset the "girly" purple wizard's cap.

Once the "magic tools" were complete, we began the various experiments (i.e. The Basics of Wizardry) which, when accompanied by a spin of the wand and an "Abracadabra" work crazy magic in the eyes of a 4 year old:
  • Fizzy Frenzy: citric acid, baking soda and water
  • Hocus Pocus Powder: more of the above plus red cabbage juice powder which has amazing color-changing abilities

  • Frothing Color-Changing Potion: a combination of the above that turns the separate red and blue mixtures into a purple bubbling potion

  • Test Tube Crystal Ball: combine vegetable oil, color tablets and water for an awesome lava-lamp-looking thingy

  • Magic Wizard Lava: use the same stuff as above plus the red cabbage juice powder, citric acid and baking powder - throw in an Alakazoom! - and you've got a bubbling-over mess that will thrill any blooming wizard!

The finale was the Glow-In-The-Dark Bubbling Potion which added zinc sulfide (and a "do not drink" disclaimer) for a bright-glowing-yellow-green-hide-in-the-bathroom-for-darkness Potion of All Potions!  It was super-duper awesome...and over in a matter of seconds.

The boys continued the fun when Cooper decided to turn Coleman into a tiger.  So, Cole decided to take him up on it as long as Cooper would close his eyes while casting the spell.  Cooper agreed and donned his wizard cap, waved his magic wand and shouted out what few magic words he could muster.  After opening his eyes, he saw only a Mighty Beanz Tiger Bean sitting where Cole had been.  The size of his eyes and the smile on his face will forever be unmatched!

Miles of Smiles!

We spent the past weekend at our favorite getaway:
Defeated Creek Campground in Carthage, TN!
Jason hooked up the camper on Thursday morning before work and we met him that evening for four days of peaceful fabulousness!  The campground is only about 75 minutes away and is a great place for bike-riding, swimming and memory-making!
After settling in on Thursday night, we woke up to a beautiful, hot Friday.  Jason headed to work for a few hours while the kids and I passed the time with fun activities and FOOD!  Cooper and I hopped on our bikes while Ivy rode in the cart and we went for a morning ride.  After cruising the campground, we rode up to the marina restaurant where the kids were thrilled to get a good dose of pancakes.  Our table overlooked the boat dock.  The servers love kids and are always attentive to their needs.  It is a simple little place and their friendliness only adds to its character.  Cooper enjoyed finding the artwork taped to the wall that he had made in the Spring when we were there with the Shaffer kids.

With full bellies, we headed down the marina steps to feed the bluegill and giant carp.  For this purpose, the marina store sells bags of popcorn for $0.25.  These infamous fish seem to be the hungriest you have ever seen and they can gulp down a sandwich-sized bag in no time flat.  The fish are huge and they often pile on top of each other to grab whatever you throw their way.  The kids loved it and enjoyed getting splashed as the fish fought for every bite.

After we finished, we rode back to the camper to cool off.  I keep a box of play stuff on hand which is where we found the Super Elastic Bubble Plastic.  Cooper and I played a bunch of games: "Chick-Tac-Toe" (a tic tac toe game from the Easter Bunny), Go Fish, spinning tops, harmonica, etc.  It was cool, quiet, down-time that we all needed.
Giant Green Bubble - the biggest one yet!
Ivy loves to color and she enjoyed the Crayola "Color Wonder" markers that miraculously only show up when used on the accompanying coloring book.  That is why I was so amazed to turn around and find her legs and forehead covered in blue and purple marker.  She apparently managed to dig deep enough in the box to find some hidden gems of fun that were not from the "Color Wonder" line.  Oops.
After Ivy's nap, we went to the campground beach to swim.  Ivy has finally figured out how to stay upright with her floaties on which gives her some independence in the water.  The beach area is partitioned off and is a great place to build sandcastles and cool off in the sweltering Tennessee heat.  We rode our bikes from our site and enjoyed some fun in the sun.

Jason returned that afternoon (with groceries) and we got cleaned up and started dinner.  He went on a deep sea fishing trip in July where he caught some red snapper and he threw it on along with brats and dogs for an early dinner.  It was amazing (as is most everything he cooks) and we all turned in early from exhaustion.

Dinner's on!

On Saturday morning, we headed back to the marina for breakfast because it was simply too hot to cook.  When we got back, Jason and Cooper went down the hill to fish.  We had picked up some night crawlers and they spent awhile enjoying some guy-time together.  Although they didn't catch anything, they had a nice morning together while Ivy napped.
Fishing buddies

We all went back to the beach that afternoon to cool off and Jason pulled Cooper around in this huge inner tube.  He loved it - especially when he went "super fast."  Ivy and I played in the sand with a bunch of other kids - many of which had plenty of beach toys for us to borrow.

Saturday night was hot yet again and we decided to forego the cooking and try out a catfish place down the road - The Mountainside Cafe.  It was a total dive but we loved it and its artery-clogging selections of southern goodness.  We liked the catfish but the slaw and fried squash were superb!
The best daddy ever!
Off they go for night fishing
At dusk, the guys trekked off for their night fishing excursion.  Ivy and I went to bed and I awoke to the squeals of Cooper having caught his first bluegill!  He was so proud (almost as proud as Dad) and the tall tales of its size soon began.
Sunday we took a bike ride and then decided to pack up early to avoid breaking-down the campsite in the hottest sun.  It is always a lot of work for us (mostly Jason) but it is so fulfilling to come home to hear the kids ask: "When can we go camping again?"
