Seven Hills vs. Hillwood

We had our second dual meet today vs. Hillwood Country Club.  They are our toughest competitor, according to the coaches, but when the 1st half was complete, we were looking pretty good.  We are hoping that the "big kids" (ages 11-18) can hold 'em off this afternoon to pull out the win.

Here are some of the highlights:

Cooper on the block for
25-yard Freestyle

Cooper trucks along for
25 yards of Freestyle

Cole wraps up 25 yards of Freestyle with a personal best
time of 18.06 (cutting 4.5 seconds off his fastest time)

Cooper and the Seven Hills 6&Under Boys B Relay
prepare for greatness!
Cooper swims an amazing 25 yards backstroke...

...which was more like 45 yards
if you count the zigzags
but he was
LEGAL
the whole way!

Cole on the block for
25 Breaststroke.
Time: 27.20
(3.5 seconds off his best time)

Cole also swam the 100 Individual Medley (IM) and both relays.  He took an amazing 18 seconds off his best time on the IM ending with a 1:52:05.  He was anchorman on the 7-8 Boys A Free Relay and swam the Breaststroke leg for the A Medley Relay.  In both relays, Seven Hills took 2nd behind a dynamo Hillwood crew.  But what a meet it was!  Tonight is the Swim Team Ice Cream Social so we are off to buy "our favorite topping" to take to the festivities.  It should be a sugar overload for certain!

I know that I posted Ivy's new applique outfit yesterday
but here she is modeling it.

Southern Goodness Must Have!

There is a new Farmer's Market at Forest Hills United Methodist Church that started last Saturday and will continue through August or September.  It is small but growing every week and we enjoyed grabbing some great tomatoes, plums and peaches yesterday.  The cucumbers and peppers have been coming on in our garden but our tomatoes are not yet ready.  So, with our cucumbers, their tomatoes, and a great sweet onion from Kroger, I made this fantastic summer salad that I've always loved and wanted to share it with you.  If you love fresh veggies, the recipe says to throw in bell pepper too but I can't stand bell pepper so it is not in my mix.
Cat's KYUKE Salad
2 cups sugar (*gasp*)
1 cup white vinegar
1T mustard seed
tons o' cucumbers
tons o' tomatoes
tons o' sweet onion
and bell pepper if you like

Bring the sugar, vinegar and mustard seed to a boil.
Cut up your veggies.  Pour the mix over the top.
Let your Summer be splendid!!

Sunday Sewing!

I made Ivy a couple of items this morning and thought I'd share the outcome.  She is happy to oblige when I get out the camera and promptly yells "Cheese!" even before I'm ready.  For this salmon-ish paisley pillowcase dress, I decided to make a contrasting pair of bloomers.  Super Duper Cute (as Brandi would say.)  She is growing so fast that I decided to make it a little longer because the ones I made a few months ago are starting to look like shirts rather than dresses.  I think I'll make some bloomers for those other ones so that she can continue to wear them.

I also decided to attempt an applique to go with this skirt I made a bit ago.  It turned out cute although please don't look too closely.  I'm thankful that the material patterns are a bit abstract because this first attempt at applique is rather abstract itself.

On another note, we went to see Toy Story 3 yesterday and it was truly wonderful.  The end tore me up and really opened my eyes to how fast the time flies.  As you know, Cole turned nine this past week and this was the first time I realized that we're already half way to college.  Needless to say, I walked away with swollen eyes and a huge lump in my throat.  I need (and want) to spend more time cherishing the moments we all have together.  I'm getting better at focusing on the simple things but still have a long way to go to not be such a spazz!

Thankfully, I am blessed with a husband who is an expert at living each day to its fullest.

Swim Meet Domination!

Seven Hills Swim Club had their first swim meet yesterday and Cole (9) and Cooper (4) were both entered for their new team.  After a day of sweltering heat, Seven Hills came out as victors over the Cottonwood Pirates with a final score of 530 to 813.  Way to go, Barracudas!

When we joined the club in early June, Cooper could not yet swim 25 yards of freestyle without stopping.  A mere 2 weeks later, the boy swam not only 25 yards of free, but also 25 yards of backstroke and was the number 3 man on the 6 & under boys Freestyle B Relay!  He did all three events with a personal best time and not once did he stop to grab the lane line for a break.  It was fabulous!

His backstroke is hilarious!  Albeit legal, he doesn't use his arms much and mostly just kicks with his head back, chin up and body nearly vertical rather than horizontal.  The best part is that he is smiling from ear to ear the entire length of the pool.  His arms are moving, yes.  But they are actually kinda going the opposite way that they should be...more like in a freestyle motion so they don't help him progress much.  By the end of the race, he was the only man in the pool so, given that he is the youngest team member, the entire pool was cheering him on.  After the race, the head coach called him over to tell him "Great job" and give him an Air Heads candy reward.  He got up to her and in a form like the statue from the movie "A Night at the Museum" he proceed to flex one arm up and say "Boom" then flex the other arm up and say "Pow."  Anyone within close proximity was HOWLING!  If I had a video of that, it would surely get top hits on YouTube.

The age-group cut-off date is June 1.  Since Cole turned 9 after that date, he gets to swim this season as an 8-year old.  So, for the 7-8 boys, he was entered in 25 Back, 25 Breast, 100 IM (fly, back, breast, free) and the A freestyle and medley relays (breast).  Not to sound biased, but the kid SMOKED 'EM in every event!  He came away with HIGH POINT for his agegroup and first place in all five events.  Cole spent last week in Vacation Bible School and the week before was held poolside with swimmer's ear so he has only been to a few practices since joining the team.  Therefore, the coaches really didn't know Cole at all.  But, when he got to his last leg of the IM nearly 3/4 of the pool ahead of anyone else, Coach turned around to me and said, "Um...WOW!"  I think they know him now.

What a day.

Love,
Proud (and loud) Mama

Father's Day 2010

We went to Lawrenceburg, TN yesterday to spend Father's Day with Jason's Grandfather Paw Paw and the rest of the family.  Paw Paw was thrilled and we enjoyed a special day at church with them.  The preacher who married us is the minister at their church and it was great to see him and listen to his jab at Paw Paw that it takes his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to come to church in order for him to sit near the front row.  He was beaming with pride!

After the endless supply of suckers and gummies during the service, the kids were thrilled to head to lunch at the David Crockett State Park Restaurant.  Dee Dee bought Cooper a neat snake snap bracelet that he is still snapping around his wrist 24 hours later.  We had a great lunch with them and then spent the afternoon at Granny and Paw Paw's where Cooper helped bag some of their pick-ready veggies from the garden.  Apparently, the suffocating heat made him decide that it was a good idea to try some banana peppers which he willingly ate straight off the plant.

Ivy started walking this week and she made several attempts at crossing the room during our visit.  She is 17 months old now so I'm glad she finally decided to walk rather than drag her outfits across the floor.  This has been a problem because most of the things I have for her are dresses and she crawls right up into them and gets caught.  She'll be much happier now that she has figured out how to get around in an alternative fashion.

Fun with Grandma Dee Dee!

Today is Cole's birthday and he is finally NINE!  The Slip-N-Slide from Aunt Beanie was a huge hit this afternoon.  Here are some pics of them enjoying the ride!

Campout Craziness!

Cole's Crazy Campout was a huge success!  The boys went home having survived a night of utter chaos and it was super special in every way.  A brief recap of the night will in no way express how fabulous it was.  I took a ton of pictures and found it terribly hard to narrow it down.  But, with the achieved absence of all pressure that the blog post has to do the event complete justice, I rest with the feeling that these boys will remember this one for a long, long time.

Cole invited 3 buddies and Luke, David and Addison arrived at 5pm.  Given that it was a balmy 92 with 87% humidity, we decided to start inside for an hour-long Wii Challenge.  This went by way too fast for me and by 6pm they were ready to head outdoors.  The boys were assigned the task of gathering sticks for the fire.  All 5 boys (Cooper included) sprinted around the yard and the job was completed in no time flat.  They gathered around the fire pit for the challenge to see who could start the quickest fire with the flint block.  Jason demonstrated while I quickly realized that these boys were not going to be able to accomplish this task.  When I bought the flint thingy, it seemed like a brilliant idea but after watching Jason I knew it was beyond their capabilities.  So, instead, Jason showed them how it is done and then let Addison use the long lighter to start the evening's fire.  It was obvious that none of these boys had used a lighter before so this, in itself, turned out to be exciting in its own simple way.  He also taught them how to make neat camping fire starters out of cardboard egg cartons, lint from the dryer and candle wax (a trick someone taught me on a camping trip last year).

Addison starts the fire!

After the lesson on fire safety and a quick game of Star Wars trivia, off they ran to play basketball, ride scooters, roller skate, bike ride and work up a sweat.  I brought out a bucket of cold water and bandannas and they each grabbed one and soaked their heads, wiped their faces and headed toward the fire for the hot dog roast.

No Girls Allowed!

  Dinner is served.
When given the option of playing another game or doing the s'mores, the boys easily chose the latter.  We were being quite casual with the whole thing and told them that they could have as many s'mores as they wanted.  The first thing I heard was Luke yelling "TRIPLE DECKER!"  What came soon after was pure caloric overload.  Ivy enjoyed her first marshmallow (unroasted) and sat in awe at what these boys created when armed with graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate.
Next was the firefly-catching contest and each boy was provided a baby food jar and lid before setting off to grab as many unsuspecting lightning bugs as possible within the allotted time frame.  Cooper was screaming the entire time from both excitement and the occasional freak-out to the fact that he actually caught something.  David won with a grand total of 15 and was the proud winner of a package of Lightning Bug Gummies.

We had planned to watch the movie outside on sleeping bags but it was still so durn hot that we moved Movie Time indoors.  The guys watched Battle for Terra and enjoyed the time to cool off and chill for a bit.  Snacks (although complete overkill in the sugar department) were as follows:
  • Lightning Bug Gummies: won by David in the lightning bug contest and consumed by David
  • Skittles: given to Cole in a birthday bag from Luke then traded to Luke for the Hot Tamales, consumed by Luke
  • Hot Tamales: won by Luke for knowing that the bird call we were hearing from the woods was a Dove, traded to Cole because Luke doesn't like Hot Tamales, consumed by Cooper
After the movie ended at 10:20pm (during which Cooper fell asleep), the boys decided that it was time to play flashlight tag.  We put Cooper in bed and I headed out with them to begin the game.  It was still hot but gorgeous out there with the white lights wrapped around a big pine tree and the camping lights around the canopy.  They made up their own rules which included the "it" man singing "Red Robin" while hunting and the hunted boys yelling "YUM" from their hiding places.  It was hilarious!  They played with their cool laser light/flashlight/light saber souvenirs for about 30 minutes and then came in to wash, brush teeth and change before heading to the camper with Jason.

Reports from Jason stated that they proceeded to play DS until he had HAD IT by 12:30am.  After shutting off the electronics, they talked and told stories until well after 1am.  Jason was pooped.  I was cozy in bed inside the house with Cooper asleep beside me and dozed off at about 11:30.  At 3:45am, Cooper woke me up freaking out because he was supposed to sleep in the camper for the party.  So, after locating the Crocs, we headed out and entered the "no girls allowed" camper where Cooper crawled in bed and joined the big boys!

Morning came early when the boys came rushing in at 7:15 to play with the gifts Cole had been given the night before.  The original plan was for the guys to cook the pancakes, bacon and eggs on the fire at the campsite but the noon rainstorm came early and we decided to whip it up (sans kiddos) while they played.  The hearty meal included pancakes, bacon, eggs, tortillas, hot sauce, salsa, avocado, onion and cheese.  David created a gorgeous breakfast burrito while the other boys opted for pancakes.
David and Luke were picked up at 10am (Addison left on Friday night because his brother's birthday was the next morning) and we were sad to see them go.  They are great guys and I was proud to watch them get along so well, play hard, and include Cooper without hesitation for the entire event.  I can't believe Cole is already nine.  Proud doesn't begin to explain how I feel about him.  You can be a parent to the best of your ability but great friends play such a huge roll in growing up that it is nice to see him surrounded by such great kids!

Cole's Crazy Campout preparation!

Cole will turn NINE YEARS OLD on Monday and tonight we will celebrate with Cole's Crazy Campout.  He has invited three of his buddies to come celebrate and campout for his birthday.

For the invitations, we made tents out of construction paper and wrote a poem to go inside.  Cole was very excited and I was glad to see him so involved in the planning process.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of one of the invitations before I mailed them but here is the poem:

A night of adventure under the stars
We might see Venus, Jupiter or Mars!

We’ll sleep in the pop-up – stay up all night?
It will get dark so bring a flashlight!

We’ll watch a movie and play flashlight tag
Don’t forget a pillow and sleeping bag!

We’ll roast hotdogs and eat s’mores...
An amazing night in the great outdoors!

Yesterday, the kids made signs for the campout.  Cole decided what he wanted them to say and then I did the horrific bubble letters.  The kids did the coloring and they turned out quite cute!  Cooper added character with his own style of out-of-the-box coloring which initially frustrated Cole but then he realized how it only adds to the "craziness" of the campout!

We went out this week and found some fun supplies to go along with our camping theme.  Most of the boys have never camped so we are going to make sure they "rough it" a bit to get the full experience.  We bought flasks and super cool light wands that are on lanyards.  They have 4 functions: flashlight, blinking, full light wand and whistle.  Too cute!  These will be great for flashlight tag.  We also found these small Coleman lanterns that are battery operated which will be their favors but also help if they need to escape for a quick visit to a nearby tree.  The best part is that they say Coleman right on them.

We've planned several games including a timed fire-starter race with a flint.  The boys will also be in charge of making the pancakes tomorrow (with hovering supervision) which will be a fun experience for them.  With hot dogs on the fire, s'mores, an outdoor movie, catching fireflies and flashlight tag...this should be a night they won't soon forget.  Could someone call Mother Nature and ask her to turn down the heat a smidge?
